BUDDHA'S 5 DREAMS

According to Tripikata, Lord Buddha had 5 dreams before the night of enlightenment.

1. He dreamed that he was sleeping on the surface of the earth, with the Himalaya mountains as his pillow, placing his left hand on the Eastern Ocean, his right hand on the Western Ocean and both his legs on the Southern Ocean. This first dream presaged his becoming a Buddha and his teachings will spread far across the land.

2. He dreamed that a tree emerged from his navel rising higher and higher until it touches the sky. This second dream presaged that he would be able to teach denizens of heaven.

3. He dreamed that hordes of maggots, with white bodies and black heads, slowly crept up his legs covering them from the tip of the toe-nail right up to the knee-cap. This third dream presaged that a great many people would adore the Buddha and take Great Refuge in him.

4. He dreamed that four kinds of birds, blue, yellow, red and black, came flying from the four directions and when they threw themselves down at his feet, all the four kinds of birds turned completely white. This fourth dream presaged that clansmen from the four classes of people, namely, the princely class, the brahmin class, the merchant class, the poor class, would embrace the Teaching of the Buddha.

5. He dreamed that he was walking on a large mountain of excreta without getting besmeared. This fifth dream presaged large acquisition of the four requisites of robe, alms-food, dwelling place and medicines and that he would utilize them without any attachment and clinging to them.

ปัญจมหาสุบินนิมิต

พระไตรปิฎกได้ระบุถึงเหตุการณ์ที่พระพุทธเจ้าทรงเสวยปัญจมหาสุบิน หรือฝัน ๕ ประการในคืนก่อนวันตรัสรู้ ซึ่งเนื้อหามีปรากฏใน คัมภีร์อังคุตตรนิกาย ปัญจกนิบาต พระสุตตันตปิฎก อันมีใจความว่า

๑. ทรงฝันเห็นว่าพระองค์บรรทมอยู่เหนือแผ่นดิน โดยมีแขนซ้ายขวาและพระบาทจรดไปถึงมหาสมุทร ความหมายของฝันนี้คือ พระองค์จะได้ตรัสรู้เป็นพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า ธรรมะของพระองค์จะแผ่ไปทั่วแผ่นดิน

๒. ทรงฝันว่า มีหญ้าแพรกเส้นหนึ่งงอก จากสะดือและขึ้นไปทะลุอากาศเบื้องบน ความหมายของฝันนี้คือ จะได้ทรงประกาศสัจธรรมแก่เหล่าเทพยดาและมนุษย์ทั้งมวล

๓. ทรงฝันถึงหนอนตัวสีขาวหัวสีดำแบบนับจำนวนไม่ได้ไต่ขึ้นตามตัว ความหมายของฝันนี้คือ เหล่าผู้คนมากมายจะเข้ามาสู่สำนักของพระพุทธ

๔. ทรงฝันถึงนก ๔ จำพวกซึ่งมี สีเหลือง เขียว แดง ดำ บินมาจากทิศต่าง ๆ มาสู่พระบาทของพระองค์และกลายเป็นสีขาว ความหมายของฝันนี้คือ คนทุกวรรณะ ไม่ว่าจะวรรณะกษัตริย์ พราหมณ์ แพศย์ และศูทร เมื่อมาหาพระพุทธแล้ว จะได้รู้ธรรมอันบริสุทธิ์โดยเท่าเทียมกัน

๕. ทรงฝันเห็นตัวพระองค์ยืนอยู่บนภูเขาอันเต็มไปด้วยมูลแต่มูลเหล่านั้นไม่ติดตัวพระองค์ ความหมายของฝันนี้คือ แม้นพระองค์จะมีพร้อมด้วยลาภสักการะแต่ก็มิได้ติดยึดอยู่ในลาภสักการะ (สุชีพ ปุญญานุภาพ, 1987)

ENLIGHTENMENT

In the Suttapitaka, the Buddhist canon as preserved in the Theravada tradition, a couple of texts tell the the tale of the Buddha’s attainment of enlightenment.

As prince Siddhartha seated beneath the tree of knowledge. He determined not to move from the spot unless he has attained the knowledge to rid all the sufferings. When his mind was purified by concentration, it is said he acquired the three knowledges.The first was the knowledge of his past lives and the past lives of all beings. The second knowledge was the cycle of all living beings. The third knowledge is the four noble truths about sufferings and how to be freed from them. He finally achieved Enlightenment and became the Buddha.

การตรัสรู้

ใน โพธิราชกุมารสูตร, พระไตรปิฎก เล่มที่ ๑๓ พระสุตตันตปิฎก เล่มที่ ๕ มัชฌิมนิกาย มัชฌิมปัณณาสก์ ได้กล่าวถึงเหตุการณ์การตรัสรู้ของพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าว่า หลังจากออกผนวชได้ ๖ ปี จนเมื่อพระชนมายุ ๓๕ พรรษา เจ้าชายสิทธัตถะก็ทรงตรัสรู้เป็นพระพุทธเจ้า ณ ใต้ร่มไม้ศรีมหาโพธิ์ ฝั่งแม่น้ำเนรัญชรา ตำบลอุรุเวลาเสนานิคม ในตอนเช้ามืดของวันพุธ ขึ้น ๑๕ ค่ำ เดือน ๖ ปีระกา ก่อนพุทธศักราช ๔๕ ปี ปัจจุบันสถานที่ตรัสรู้แห่งนี้เรียกว่า พุทธคยา เป็นตำบลหนึ่งของเมืองคยาแห่งรัฐพิหารของอินเดีย

สิ่งที่ตรัสรู้ คือ อริยสัจสี่ เป็นความจริงอันประเสริฐ ๔ ประการของพระพุทธเจ้า ซึ่งพระพุทธเจ้าเสด็จไปที่ต้นมหาโพธิ์ และทรงเจริญสมาธิภาวนาจนจิตเป็นสมาธิได้ฌานที่ ๔ แล้วบำเพ็ญภาวนาต่อไปจนได้ฌาน ๓ คือ ยามต้น : ทรงบรรลุ “ปุพเพนิวาสานุติญาณ” คือ ทรงระลึกชาติในอดีตทั้งของตนเองและผู้อื่นได้ ยามสอง : ทรงบรรลุ “จุตูปปาตญาณ” คือ การรู้แจ้งการเกิดและดับของสรรพสัตว์ทั้งหลาย ด้วยการมีตาทิพย์สามารถเห็นการจุติและอุบัติของวิญญาณทั้งหลาย ยามสาม หรือยามสุดท้าย : ทรงบรรลุ “อาสวักขญาณ” คือ รู้วิธีกำจัดกิเลสด้วย อริยสัจ ๔ (ทุกข์ สมุทัย นิโรธ มรรค) และได้ตรัสรู้เป็นพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า

FACING 3 DAUGHTERS OF MARA

According to Tripikata, the tale of this event occured as follow:

During the fifth week after lord buddha attained enlightenment. while meditating, three most charming women came to disturb his meditation. They tried to tempt the Buddha by dancing seductively in nude. their efforts were in vain. And soon they grew tired and left the Buddha alone.

การเผชิญ ๓ ธิดามาร

ในพระไตรปิฎก เล่มที่ ๑๕ พระสุตตันตปิฎก เล่มที่ ๗ สังยุตตนิกาย สคาถวรรค มารธีตุสูตรที่ ๕ มีระบุเหตุการณ์ในตอนนี้ว่า ในสัปดาห์ที่ ๕ หลังจากที่พระพุทธเจ้าได้ตรัสรู้ พระองค์ทรงประทับใต้ต้นไทร ในลำดับนั้นธิดามารทั้ง ๓ ประกอบด้วย นางตัณหา นางราคา และนางอรดี พยายามให้พระพุทธองค์ตกอยู่ในอำนาจ โดยทั้งสามนางได้เข้าไปประเล้าประโลมพระพุทธเจ้าด้วยกลวิธีทางกามารมณ์ต่างๆ เช่น เปลื้องเสื้อผ้าออก และแปลงร่างเป็นสาวงามในวัยต่าง ๆ แต่พระพุทธเจ้าผู้ทรงบริสุทธิ์สิ้นเชิงแล้วไม่ทรงแสดงพระอาการผิดปกติถึงแม้เวลานั้นพระองค์จะลืมพระเนตร
